Mr. Elton, a Vicar, not a Rector

All of Jane Austen’s novels feature clergymen and church livings. Most of the clergymen are rectors, but one is a vicar, Mr. Elton. Why did Jane Austen make him a vicar? To show readers that he had a low income and would need to marry a rich wife! Emma didn’t see it, but we can. Check out my post at Jane Austen’s World today that explains the difference between rectors and vicars, and why it is important in Emma.

Is Mr. Elton courting Emma or Harriet? His position as vicar would have answered the question for readers!
