All of Jane Austen’s novels feature clergymen and church livings. Most of the clergymen are rectors, but one is a vicar, Mr. Elton. Why did Jane Austen make him a vicar? To show readers that he had a low income and would need to marry a rich wife! Emma didn’t see it, but we can.
